Raising  Awareness For CMT.

There are several diseases that nowadays are catching the attention of the public. But one of the essential diseases that people aren't well educated about is neurological disorders. Medically, neurological diseases are problems that affect the brain and also the nerves present all across the human body including the spinal cord. A variety of symptoms can be caused by structural, metabolic, or electrical irregularities in the brain, spinal cord, or other nerves.

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) is a group of inherited disorders that cause nerve damage. This harm is mostly in the arms and legs. termed after the three doctors who first described it in 1886. Jean-Martin Charcot, Pierre Marie, and Howard Henry Tooth. The term "CMT" is commonly also called hereditary motor sensory neuropathy (HMSN)

The general incidence rate of CMT is around 19 cases per 100,000 persons, however, this varies. CMT damages the peripheral nerves, which convey signals from the brain and spinal cord to the muscles and relay feelings as pain from the rest of the body to the brain and spine. CMT comes in a variety of forms.

Signs and symptoms of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease naturally appear in adolescence or early middle age; however, it may similarly develop in midlife. in addition, it is worth noting that these symptoms frequently initiate in the feet and legs, but they ultimately affect your hands and arms.

Patients with CMT experience muscle contractions, Weakness in their legs, ankles, and feet which leads to difficulty in walking especially, because of foot deformities as high arches or hammertoes. Moreover, Loss of muscle bulk in both their feet and legs, Diminished ability to run, Trouble lifting their foot at the ankle which is known as the foot drop, Awkward gait, Frequent tripping or falling, and Lessened sensation & loss of feeling in their peripheral areas.

They can also experience difficulty swallowing and chewing breathing, or even in speaking if the muscles that regulator these functions are affected by the disease. The severity of symptoms differs momentously from a patient to another, even amongst family members.

The main causes of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease as being a hereditary genetic disorder are the mutations that takes place in the genes that affect the nerves located in areas as feet, legs, hands and arms. Occasionally, these mutations intend to damage the nerves. However, there are other types of mutations that shatter the myelin sheath which is the protective layer that surrounds the nerve only. Both cases result in a weaker signal that propagates between the brain and extremities.

CMT has no cure, however physical therapy, leg braces and supporters, occupational therapy, and other orthopedic surgeries might help patients manage the disease's severe symptoms.  furthermore, pain relievers might be recommended for people who are in a lot of pain. In addition, there are many CMT organizations and associations like the CMTA Association which are nonprofitable associations that aim to provide the patients with all the support and knowledge they need as well as to promote research for treatment.

In Conclusion, CMT is a group of neurotological disorders that highly affects the peripherals causing many difficulties faced by the patients. so, understanding the struggles of CMT patients will definitely result in a better life for them.
